Virtual Reality Training Videos on PPE Keep Saskatchewan Paramedics Safe During Pandemic

Prior to March 2020 Saskatchewan’s 2,000 paramedics rarely needed to gear up with full personal protective equipment (PPE), a practice usually reserved for hospital staff treating patients in isolation. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic though, it suddenly became critical that the province’s emergency health professionals receive a refresher on the proper way to don and doff gowns, goggles, masks, and gloves, to ensure they didn't pick up the virus from patients or risk spreading it to others.

Virtual reality helping kids prepare for MRI scans

An MRI scan can be scary for a child, but now a new program at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital is aiming to change that to help reduce anxiety in pediatric patients. The MRI Ready Program uses several tools, including virtual reality software developed by Saskatoon company Luxsonic Technologies Inc. to prepare pediatric patients prior to their MRI scan.

Tech company using virtual reality to improve dementia care

Saskatoon-based company Luxsonic — a firm that specializes in developing virtual and augmented reality systems for medical purposes — is one of five finalists in the AGE-WELL National Impact Challenge: Startup Edition. The regional competition ends in Vancouver on July 16, and a $15,000 prize will be awarded to the winner.

Expert collaboration brings exceptional learning opportunities to students. With the help of advanced technology, students from the Schools of Nursing and Health Sciences will now be able to get a close up look into an operating room, without ever having to leave the classroom. The Saskatchewan Health Authority, including Regina surgeon Dr. Steve Pooler and his surgical team, along with Sask Polytech’s Perioperative Nursing program and Luxsonic Technologies Incorporated came together to create this innovative project — a first in Saskatchewan.
